Common questions

Spray foam expands on contact, creating an airtight seal that blocks air leaks, moisture, and drafts far better than traditional insulation. It provides a higher R-value per inch and acts as both insulation and an air barrier—making it ideal for Alberta’s cold climate where heat loss is a major concern.

Spray foam is perfect for areas where air leakage is common—like rim joists, crawl spaces, basements, attics, and around windows and doors. It’s also frequently used in metal buildings and commercial or industrial spaces that require high-performance insulation in irregular or tight spaces.

Yes. Once cured, spray foam is safe, inert, and long-lasting. Modern formulations are low in VOCs and often include environmentally conscious components. Its superior energy efficiency also reduces your carbon footprint over time, making it a smart and sustainable choice for Alberta property owners.

  • Open-Cell Spray Foam (ocSPF):
  • Texture: Soft, spongy, and flexible. Often compared to a dense sponge.
  • R-Value: Lower, typically R-3.6 to R-3.8 per inch.
  • Expansion: Expands significantly upon application, making it excellent for filling large, irregular cavities.
  • Vapor Permeability: It is vapor-permeable, meaning moisture can pass through it. It is an air barrier but not a vapor barrier.
  • Best Use: Above-grade exterior walls and attic roof decks (swap for) floor systems such as living space above garages where its high expansion fills gaps effectively.
  • Closed-Cell Spray Foam (ccSPF):
  • Texture: Rigid, dense, and hard.
  • R-Value: Much higher, typically R-6 to R-7 per inch.
  • Expansion: Expands much less than open-cell.
  • Vapor Permeability: It is a certified air barrier and vapor barrier when applied at a sufficient thickness (typically 2 inches or 50mm).
  • Best Use: Basements, rim joists, and any application where space is limited and a high R-value is needed. Its rigidity also adds structural strength to the building assembly.
  • This is a critical concern. Spray foam is created by a chemical reaction that occurs on-site. During application and for a short period afterward (typically 24-48 hours), it releases volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

    • Professional Installation is Non-Negotiable: The safety and effectiveness of spray foam depend entirely on the installer’s skill. The chemicals must be mixed at the correct temperature and ratio. Faulty application can lead to improper curing and persistent, harmful off-gassing.
    • Re-occupancy Time: Reputable installers will require you to vacate the premises for a minimum of 24 hours to allow the foam to fully cure and ventilate.
Long-Term Safety: When installed correctly by a certified professional using CCMC-approved products, spray foam is inert, stable, and does not pose a health risk after the curing period. Always ensure your installer is certified and provides you with the product’s technical data sheets.
